I love my job, says Oshoala

Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala says the struggle to stay consistent over the years is the secret of her dominance in Africa’s women football, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Oshoala has won a record six CAF Women’s Player of The Year award, taking home the latest at the ceremony held in Marrakesh, Morocco earlier this month.

In the year under review, Oshoala was fantastic for both club and country and was a key part of Nigeria’s sensational run at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, just as she won LaLiga and the UEFA Women’s Champions League with Barcelona Feminine, scoring 21 goals in the league.

At the World Cup, she also became the first female African player to score at three World Cups after hitting target in Nigeria’s breathtaking 3-2 win over co-hosts Australia.

Before now, Oshoala won the award in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022, and this time, the 29-year-old saw off the contest of South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and Zambia’s Barbara Banda to claim the crown.

At the homecoming event organised in her honour on Monday, the Barcelona Feminine forward said her love for the game makes it easy for her to keep performing at the top level.

“For me, it’s very simple, I love my job, I love what I do, I try to be consistent, which is actually one of the most difficult things to do. It takes dedication and I tell myself every day that I want to be better than who I was yesterday,” Oshoala said.

This season, Oshoala has scored five league goals in eight appearances before the Spanish women’s league went on break.
