Eagles keepers crisis: Peseiro holds talks with Nwabili

Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, will be in the stands on Saturday (today) to watch goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili in action for his South African club, Chippa United as he searches for replacement to fix the goalkeeping crisis in the national team.

Peseiro who paid a visit to Chippa United at their training ground in Gqeberha on Friday held talks with Nwabili who is expected to be in goal for Chippa United when they host Golden Arrows in Johannesburg.

“Privileged to host Jose Peseiro, head coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles here in Gqeberha a moment of inspiration for us at Chippa United,” the club wrote on their X handle.

Former Lobi Stars keeper, Nwabili already been capped by the home-based Eagles, has being in great form for Chippa United keeping six clean sheets in 12 games conceding 10 goals.

There have been great concerns in the goalkeeping department with the team’s first choice, Francis Uzoho struggling to inspire confidence following the team’s poor results in recent matches.

Fellow keeper Maduka Okoye was also under the spotlight after Nigeria’s quarter-final exit from the 2021 Nations Cup, a 1-0 defeat by Tunisia.

Despite the poor form of these goalies, former captain, Peter Rufai has called for a collective response from the entire team.

“Yes, we have a goalkeeping problem, but it’s not that we don’t have quality goalkeepers,” Rufai told BBC.

“They need to be courageous, they must be strong and not let the criticisms demoralise them. The entire team should rise up to the occasion.”
