Gbadamosi confident ahead first title defence

By Daily Sports Nigeria on November 8, 2023

African Boxing Union super-bantamweight champion, Adijat Gbadamosi, is confident of defending her title in her upcoming bout on December 22 in Awka, Anambra State.

Gbadamosi’s opponent for the highly anticipated bout is yet to be decided but the 21-year-old is excited about the fight and does not think there is any opponent in Africa who can wrestle the title from her.

“I am excited. I know I am going to defend my title, it is very sure for me that I am going to lift it back after the fight,” she told PUNCH Sports Extra.

“I don’t feel worried about any opponent they bring from any country in Africa, anyone can come into that ring with me and we will fight. I am very confident.”

Gbadamosi, who became the first Nigerian female boxer to claim an ABU title on June 17, 2023, told PUNCH Sports Extra that they have been training for the fight since last month and are not going to leave anything to chance.

“We have been in the training camp since last month (October) for the title defense and we are going to be ready by December. The training has been going well, we are going to travel to Anambra for the fight one week ahead so we have enough time for preparations,” she said.

In June, Gbadamosi knocked out Zimbabwean Patience Mastara in the fifth round of the 10-round bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana to clinch the formerly vacant belt.

Mastara had to be taken out of the ring on a stretcher following the knockout she received from Gbadamosi during the co-main event at the ‘King of the Ring 3’.

The two-time Africa Youth Champion, who holds an unbeaten record of eight victories and five KOs, was excited to get the title.

“I feel great and happy that I have now become the new super-bantamweight champion and the first Nigeria female boxer to get the title. I did not have any doubts that I could defeat her and I proved it with the knockout,” she told PUNCH Sports Extra in June.

An example of sportsmanship, Gbadamosi went to check on her opponent after the fight who was stretchered out and found out from the coach that she was awake and recovering well from the blow.

From her words ahead of this title defence, she looks keen to secure another knockout and deliver a statement to make potential opponents in her division wary.
