NPFL: Insurance eye return to winning ways

By Daily Sports Nigeria on October 28, 2023

• Rangers, Gombe target victories

Bendel Insurance welcome last-placed Akwa United to the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium on Saturday (today) as they seek to get back to winning ways in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Before last weekend’s games, the Benin Arsenal were top of the log with two wins from two matches. However, the Monday Odigie-led side fell 1-0 to Gombe United.

They will feel confident of a victory against Akwa United but although the Promise Keepers are bottom of the table, they are an exciting side and know how to serve excitement.

Despite their form, only four teams have scored more goals than Akwa United, and three of those four occupy the top three spots on the table.

Insurance will have their hands full against the Uyo-based side as they have not been scoring many goals this season.

They have scored three goals, with one being an own goal but they have also found a way of limiting opposing strikers and have not conceded more than the solitary goal against Gombe this term.

Enugu Rangers host one of their traditional rivals, Kano Pillars, at the Awka City stadium in one of the most exciting ties of the weekend.

Third on the table, Rangers have been flying high this term with two wins, one draw and a loss. The Enugu-based team has scored in every game they have played, irrespective of the venue.

Kano Pillars have to be at their best against the Flying Antelopes, who are making a solid case for the league title.

Sai Masu Gida are ninth on the log with two wins and two losses. The Northern giants have not scored on the road this season, and it is challenging to see how they will curtail the Flying Antelopes in their backyard.

In a pivotal clash set to take place at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe, Plateau United will pay a visit to Gombe United.

The hosts have been riding a wave of success at home and aim to consolidate their home record with a second victory, following their narrow win against Bendel Insurance on match day four.

This encounter is the first of two consecutive games on the road for Plateau United, with their following match taking them on a lengthy journey to Eket, Akwa Ibom state.

There, they will face Akwa United of Uyo. The demanding schedule includes a midweek clash against Katsina United in Jos on match day six.
