Napoli president, Aurelio de Laurentiis, isn’t shutting the door on the possibile exit of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen with Liverpool and a host of other clubs showing interest in the forward, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Osimhen had a remarkable season in 2022/23, delivering his best-ever goal-scoring performance and aiding Napoli in capturing their first Italian crown in over three decades. With 26 goals and four assists in 32 league games, Osimhen topped the charts as Serie A’s leading scorer in his third full season since his switch from Lille in the summer of 2020.
His striking prowess isn’t confined to club football; Osimhen has found the net 20 times in international matches for Nigeria since his debut in May 2017 making him a reliable marksman for the country.
With Osimhen’s contract at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona expiring after the 2024/25 season, De Laurentiis is offering some insight into the negotiations surrounding the forward’s future.
“I have never not been calm when it comes to (Victor) Osimhen, but it takes two to tango. I remain the same, if his mood has changed, then there’s not much I can do about that,” claimed the Napoli chief when questioned on Osimhen’s “I have never not been calm when it comes to (Victor) Osimhen, but it takes two to tango. As De Laurentiis alludes, Napoli has a history of parting ways with prized assets during the final year of their contracts, as was the case with Kalidou Koulibaly’s £30m move to Chelsea last year.
In a recent report by Il Mattino via Get Football News Italy, Osimhen and his agent Roberto Calenda expressed dissatisfaction with De Laurentiis’ statements, and ‘they are deciding on a future away from Naples’.
The disagreement between the player and the club president threatens the relationship between both parties with a few months to the winter window.
Reports indicate that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool is eager to secure the services of the Nigerian forward, intensifying their scrutiny of the player in recent weeks. Klopp even dispatched a senior scout to observe Osimhen playing for Nigeria against Saudi Arabia in a friendly.
In a report by UK Publication, Sport Witness, citing Italian journalist Valter De Maggio, the Napoli forward has agreed personal terms with the English giants.
