Young Nigerian midfielder Ndubuisi ‘Mikel’ Agu has been loaned by Portuguese parent club Porto to fellow Primeira Liga side Vitoria Setubal on a season long loan deal.
Agu who is immensely talented, but has found it hard to break into Porto’s first team, is expected to gain more playing time in Vitoria Setubal.
Speaking to Vitoria Setubal's website Agu said: “It is a day of immense happiness. Long time waiting for this day.
“I appreciate the confidence placed in me and I will do everything so that those responsible are satisfied with my performance. I will give everything for this shirt.”
Late Nigerian attacking legend Rashidi Yekini acquired a hero’s status in Vitoria Setubal when he played for the side between 1990 to 1994, banging in loads of goals. He made 114 appearances for Vitoria Setubal.
Agu will hope to follow in the heroic footsteps of Yekini as he continues his football development.
Benin City-raised Agu was a part of Nigeria’s Coca Cola team that won the maiden edition of the bottling Company’s Copa Cup competition for grassroots players in Africa in 2009 in South Africa. He was voted the Most Valuable Player of the competition.
The central midfielder, who is a product of Benin City’s famous youth team BJ Foundation, spent last season on loan at Belgian champions Club Brugge.
