Nigerians craving AFCON title – Eguavoen

By Daily Sports Nigeria on October 18, 2023

Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Eguavoen, has admitted that Nigerians have been craving another Africa Cup of Nations trophy win, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Nigeria last lifted the AFCON trophy 10 years ago when they triumphed in South Africa beating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final.

The Eagles are three-time winners of the AFCON, with the West African giants riding to victories in 1980, 1994, and 2013.

Eguavoen, who currently works as the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, was part of the Eagles team that won the Africa football showpiece in Tunisia some 29 years ago and also guided the team to a third-place finish in 2006 as coach.

Currently with one of the most formidable attacking lineups heading to the AFCON in Ivory Coast, the Eagles have been considered as one of the strongest contenders for the tournament as they seek to reclaim the title they won a decade ago in South Africa.

In a chat on Brila FM, Eguavoen, who has managed the Eagles on three occasions, emphasised the challenging nature of securing the continental title.

He stated, “We have been craving to try to get the Nations Cup back, since 2013 we’ve not been able to achieve that feat because we know we have the capacity, we have the quality and everything to be able to win it.

“But to say it is easy to achieve it is another thing, so everybody has to work towards the same goal, support the team whichever way we can, support the coaches and the players have to go out there and do the job.”

Nigeria have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea.
