Kevin Onyika, Technical Director of the Kickboxing Federation of Nigeria has expressed confidence that the country will have a good outing at the Kickboxing World Championship billed to take place in Albufeira, Portugal in November, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Onyika stated this during the closing ceremony of the just-concluded National Open trials in Abuja on Monday.
About 50 kick boxers took part in the trials to select the best athletes for the upcoming Kickboxing World Championship later this year.
“This is a trial for the world championship in Portugal in November and we are using it to select the athletes that will represent Nigeria,” he said.
“We have a reasonable turnout and we are happy with the performance of the athletes and the ways they responded during the trials. We are hopeful we will have a good outing in November.”
The Technical Director further stated that the objective of the two-day event was achieved.
“Our intention is to be fair and open and give everybody the opportunity to showcase their talent so that we can get the best athletes that will give us what we want.”
“We can’t do selection without having a trial because you might leave out some athletes that are good but with the trials, we were able to get good athletes that we want, so I can tell you that the objective of the trials was achieved.”
