Midfielder Rivio Ayemwenre has expressed joy at scoring Sporting Lagos first-ever goal in the Nigeria Professional Football League as they secured a 2-0 win over Gombe United in their debut NPFL game on Monday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The newly promoted side began their campaign in the topflight league with a victory at a packed Onikan stadium.
The game lived up to expectations as fans thronged the stadium to witness the return of the league to Lagos since MFM FC were relegated in 2022.
And 43 minutes into the game, Ayemwenre’s efforts to give his team the lead reaped rewards after he connected a cross from teammate Jonathan Alukwu to head home the landmark goal as they secured the lead before the end of the first half.
In the 85th minute, substitute Clement Nantuam sent a low drive to double the lead after a rebound from Junior Lokosa’s acrobatic effort.
Speaking to our correspondent after the game, Ayemwenre could not contain his emotion, saying, “That goal was incredible for me, I felt so much joy when I scored, it was so unbelievable.
“I knew the ball was going to come to me because it’s something we’ve practised many times and once the cross came and I headed in, I felt very very excited, and even my teammates couldn’t stop me.”
On their target this season, he promised the fans that they’ll do their best to chase the league title.
“We will try and win the title, we’ll try our best and work hard and we’ll keep taking it one game at a time,” Ayemwenre said.
Sporting face a tough task on match-day two against Akwa United on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
