Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is delighted to have been selected to represent Nigeria at next month’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The 30-year-old is one of the three ‘over-age’ players allowed at the Under-23 men’s tournament in Rio and will competing at his second Games.
He was also part of the Nigeria squad that took part in the 2008 tournament in Beijing, though he did not see any game-time as Nigeria took the silver medal.
“It is a massive honour to represent my country at the Olympics,” Akpeyi told his club’s website, saying he is aiming to emulate the Nigeria side that won gold in Atlanta in 1996.
“It is a massive challenge to win the Olympics and credit should go to the group that made it against all odds back in 1996. We must not forget though that we are now a different group of players and a different generation all together. The circumstances are also different.
“We are however as determined do well in the Olympics. We do not want to go to Brazil just to make up numbers. We are there to represent the country and compete. We know that millions of people in Nigeria and Africa will be backing us to do well.”
Nigeria have been pooled with Sweden, Colombia and Japan in what is a tricky first-round group.
