Fury proposes tag-team fight against Joshua, Usyk

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has boldly claimed that he could beat both Anthony Joshua and on the same night.

Fury has been heavily linked to fights against Usyk and Joshua but is yet to face either of the two in the ring. ‘The Gypsy King’ is instead set to fight former UFC champion Francis Ngannou on October 29 in Saudi Arabia but his WBC belt won’t be on the line as it is a crossover bout.

Footage from Fury’s new Netflix documentary has shown him discussing potential fights against Usyk and Joshua, which led to him proposing a tag-team boxing match. Fury thinks Usyk would be too easy a challenge so he suggested the Ukrainian should tag the British-Nigerian in for alternate rounds.

“Beating Usyk doesn’t do anything for me, who the flipping heck is he? Me giving Usyk a fight is like me not chucking him the bone, but chucking him the full dog’s home. Everybody expects me to beat Usyk, a middleweight guy who is smaller than me,” Fury said of his heavyweight rival.“If he beat me it’s like ‘Oh my god, he beat the mammoth who no one could beat!’ I’m not going to give somebody the opportunity to gain that. Hell no. It would probably be a better fight if Usyk and Joshua fought me both together, like a tag-team. Just keep switching between rounds. I’d actually batter them both on the same night, that’s how easy they are.”

Usyk was in action last Saturday as he stopped Daniel Dubois to defend his unified heavyweight titles, but the win was overshadowed by a controversial low blow that some fans believe was a legal punch.

Joshua also fought earlier on August 12 as he knocked out Robert Helenius in the seventh round, who has since tested positive for a banned substance taken from a pre-fight drug test.

The former unified heavyweight champion was shocked by the failed test. Eddie Hearn discussed Joshua’s initial reaction to the failure in an interview with Matchroom’s YouTube channel on Wednesday.

“I messaged him (Joshua) and said, “Guess what? You’re not going to believe this.” And he just replied with the eyes emoji,” Hearn said.

“And I said “Robert Helenius has tested positive. I think his words were, “Wow, you’ve really got to be taking something to beat me.”

The Nigeria striker made this assertion while reflecting on his protracted summer transfer saga that saw Napoli desperately sell him off to Al-Ahli and Chelsea in the embers of the window, with the latter his long-term choice destination offering peanuts for his signature. The 25-year-old said that he was prepared to remain at Napoli for another three or four months and secure a move to one of his suitors in January, reiterating the relief ushered by the Galatasaray offer. “I had plans to stay there and wait for three or four months and leave in January, but I think for me it was fair also to stay there because I wouldn’t let anyone decide for me,” Osimhen told Turkish media, including TRT Spor, from the Galatasaray training centre.
