Manchester United have thrashed out a huge financial package with Paul Pogba as his record-breaking move from Juventus inches closer by the day.
Sportsmail understands the central midfielder has agreed terms on a prospective five-year contract worth £220,000 a week after tax.
Juventus have rejected United’s opening offer, thought to be in the region of £86million, but their resolve is to be severely tested in the coming days.
Pogba deliberated long and hard over his future during the European Championship but has since made up his mind to leave Turin and rejoin the club he acrimoniously left in 2012.
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has convinced both the 23-year-old and his agent, Mino Raiola, that the excitement surrounding Jose Mourinho’s new dawn at Old Trafford is worth forgoing a season of Champions League football.
Woodward was not on Tuesday afternoon’s flight to China for this summer’s pre-season tour, with his priority firmly on negotiating the most high-profile transfer in their history.
Juventus now represent the only barrier to sealing Mourinho’s top target after turning down the opening offer which, with additional clauses, would exceed £100m.
The Serie A champions are desperate not to lose their talisman, although have made a number of prominent signings themselves this summer to cushion the potential blow.
Undeterred, United will go back in again with a steely determination to capture Pogba, who is currently away on holiday in Miami alongside another of Raiola’s clients, Romelu Lukaku.
Mourinho has been confident of landing Pogba all summer, with Sportsmail revealing earlier this month that the Portuguese told friends to expect the Frenchman’s arrival.
