Wasbak FC of Lagos Mainland has won the 4th edition of the annual JOF U-13 football championship organised by the Lagos State Grassroot Soccer Association.
In an entertaining finals decided Sunday, 11th, June, 2023 at the Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos Island and attracted many important dignitaries, the team defeated hard fighting Zamadek Boys of Orile by 1-0 to be crowned champions of the tournament. Also in the third place match decided earlier in the day, Qudus Babes Epe defeated Ojo Babes by a lone goal to emerge the third best team of the competition.
Speaking while presenting trophies and medals to the winning teams, Chairman/CEO, JOF Nigeria Limited, Dr. Olusegun Olugboyegun commended the football artistry displayed by the children and the discipline witnessed throughout the duration of the competition even as he noted that the tournament is part of the company’s efforts at developing the country’s football at the grassroots and expressed happiness that their effort is yielding result with one of the products of the tournament playing for the U-17 national team “The Golden Eaglets. According to him, he’s looking forward to some of the players getting national team call up in future, assuring that his company being a sports friendly organisation will continue to sponsor the tournament.
“I’m very delighted with the skills exhibited by the young players and I look forward to seeing some of them representing the country in future just as we’ve seen one of the products of the tournament making the U-17 list. “It’s equally important I state that JOF being a sports friendly company will continue to sponsor this tournament because it’s by developing football at the grassroots, that we can discover players in the mode of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and more Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo and Victor Osimhen for the country. Also speaking, Vice Chairman of Lagos State Football Association, Liameed Gafar commended the company for its efforts at developing football at the grassroots with an appeal to other corporate organisations to emulate JOF Nigeria Limited in giving hope to talented and skillful youths to excel in the round leather game.
He also announced that his association will partner with the sponsors to ensure that Lagos State maintains its leadership position in grassroots football development in the country. Winners of the tournament went home with N500,000 and a giant trophy while the runners-up got N400,000 with the third and fourth best teams getting N300,000 and N200,000 respectively. Eke Gabriel of Wasbak FC won the Highest goal scorers award with the Most Valuable player award going to Ibrahim Yusuf of Zamadek just as Ademola Afolayan emerged as the best keeper of the tournament.
The finals attracted some ex- internationals like Waidi Akani, Wasiu Ipaye and Friday Elaho with a couple of brands namely; First bank Plc, Zenith bank Plc, Custodian Insurance, Milo, Maltina, Lacasera, Gala and Indomie Noodles among others adding glamour to the finals.
