Players and officials of Rivers United, Lobi Stars and Remo Stars are already talking tough ahead of their first games in the 2022/23 Nigeria Professional Football League Super 6 playoffs, which kick off on Saturday (today) in Lagos.
The draw for the season-ending contest was made in Lagos on Friday at a ceremony at the GTI Group headquarters in Lagos and produced a potentially interesting start for the teams.
Remo Stars will get action underway against eight times champions Enyimba in the first game (2pm), before Sunshine Stars take on Rivers United (4pm), while the unbeaten Bendel Insurance will trade tackle with Lobi Stars in the last game of match-day one at 6pm.
Ahead of their opener against Enyimba, Remo Stars captain, Junior Nduka, believes they have all it takes to start brightly.
“We expect a smooth contest and for us to be here, we have put in a lot of hard work through the season and we are going to maintain it. Our first game is against Enyimba and we met in the regular season. I’m sure we will match them as always,” Nduka said after the draw.
Head coach of Rivers United, Stanley Eguma, said his team was well motivated to retain the NPFL title.
“We have good administrative and technical planning as well as a financial base, and all these things put together have seen us to this point. We have good players as well and I believe that we have what it takes.”
Rivers United General Manager, Okey Kpalukwu, added, “We expect nothing less than a credible Super 6 in keeping to time as well as credible officiating. We are prepared and we know that every other team came prepared as well. We came in as champions and our fans expect us to defend the title, which we are going to do,” Kpalakwu said.
CEO, Lobi Stars, Dominic Iorfa, was also thrilled by the live television coverage of the Super 6.
“It’s fantastic that everything will be live on television. There’s no better opportunity than this to showcase what you have and we hope it will be a good advert for the league as we kick start on Saturday (today).”
Three matches would be played per day at the NPFL Super 6, as the six teams take on one another in a round-robin format till Sunday June 11, when the table toppers will be crowned champions for the season.
