EPL: Awoniyi ranks sixth in conversion rate

By Daily Sports Nigeria on May 25, 2023

Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has been ranked as the forward with the sixth-best conversion rate in the English Premier League, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigerian, who was on target against Southampton, Chelsea and Arsenal in his last three appearances in the top flight, has a conversion rate of 24.2 percent, which is bettered by only five other players in the Premier League, according to football statistics website Whoscored.com.

He’s made just 16 starts and racked up 1.322 minutes.

Manchester City star Erling Haaland leads the way with a conversion rate of 31.3 percent, followed by Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson (26.2 per cent), Manchester City’s Phil Foden (25.6 per cent), Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak (24.4 per cent) and Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino (24.3 per cent).

But the former Union Berlin star ranks higher than Tottenham Hotspur icon Harry Kane (22 per cent) and Brentford striker Ivan Toney (21.3 per cent) despite the duo having scored more goals than the Nigerian.

Premier League statistics reveal that Awoniyi has scored in seven league matches for Forest this season. Of those games, three have been 1-0 wins on four occasions with the Nigeria international grabbing the match-winners against West Ham United, Liverpool, Southampton and Arsenal – giving Forest 12 invaluable points as they avoided relegation with a game left to play.

In fact, in all but one of the matches Awoniyi has scored in, Forest have picked up points (against Chelsea). The one loss was against Fulham and the striker scored the opener in that game which ended in 3-2.

At a glance, nine Premier League goals in 37 games is not an impressive return, however, Awoniyi missed 15 matches after suffering a groin injury in early January.

With this, it shows that Awoniyi’s goals played a significant role as the Tricky Trees avoided the drop and his £20m transfer fee will look like a good bargain.

His coach Steve Cooper has heaped praise on the centre forward following his impressive goalscoring heroics since he returned from injury.

The Nigeria striker made this assertion while reflecting on his protracted summer transfer saga that saw Napoli desperately sell him off to Al-Ahli and Chelsea in the embers of the window, with the latter his long-term choice destination offering peanuts for his signature. The 25-year-old said that he was prepared to remain at Napoli for another three or four months and secure a move to one of his suitors in January, reiterating the relief ushered by the Galatasaray offer. “I had plans to stay there and wait for three or four months and leave in January, but I think for me it was fair also to stay there because I wouldn’t let anyone decide for me,” Osimhen told Turkish media, including TRT Spor, from the Galatasaray training centre.
