Taiwo Awoniyi’s former employers, Union Berlin, have hailed the Nigeria international following his impressive display for struggling Nottingham Forest against Arsenal on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Awoniyi’s hot streak — five goals in three games — helped Steve Cooper’s side lift themselves out of the bottom three and can no longer be overtaken by Southampton, Leicester or Everton.
The Super Eagles forward joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin last summer in a deal worth €20.5m.
During his time in Germany, the 25-year-old scored 21 goals and registered five assists in 64 appearances for Union Berlin, while also helping them qualify for the Europa League.
Awoniyi suffered a groin injury that ruled him out of action for two months, missing nine Premier League games.
After two months, the big striker made his long-awaited return against Wolves and featured for just four minutes as both sides played out a 1-1 draw at The City Ground.
Having featured in seven games since his return from injury, the forward finally found the back of the net in a pulsating 4-3 victory against already relegated Southampton, bagging a brace.
He followed that up with another two goals in a 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
On Saturday, the Ilorin-born forward scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against Arsenal, thus ending the Gunners’ EPL title hopes, while also ensuring that the Tricky Trees, as Forest are fondly called, will remain in the topflight.
In a congratulatory message to the Nigerian, Union Berlin wrote on Twitter, ““Big player for big moments: Congrats from Berlin, Taiwo.”
Despite a season blighted by injury, Awoniyi has scored nine goals and assisted one in the Premier League.
