Udinese defender and Super Eagles hopeful, Kingsley Ehizibue, has been ruled out for six months after undergoing surgery for the ligament reconstruction of his right knee and has thus been ruled out of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone.
Ehizibue was born in Germany to Nigerian parents and raised in the Netherlands, whom he represented at age grade level, but he makes no secret of his dream is to represent Nigeria.
“On weeks like this, when I see everyone’s gone away on international duty, I think, ‘Oh man, I need to do something to change this!’ I don’t want to be left here training with just 10 other guys,” he said in an interview with GOAL in March.
“Even just for that reason, I’m desperate to get called up!”
Though Ehizibue was called up by former Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr in 2020 as part of the squad lined up for the 2021 AFCON qualifying fixture against Sierra Leone but was unable to join up with the squad due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Udinese full-back has been in fine form this season for the Italian side and has been tipped to get an invitation for the country’s next AFCON qualifier against the Leone Stars.
The 27-year-old once again has been dealt a heavy blow after Tutto Udinese confirmed that he had a successful surgery and started his rehabilitation therapies at the Top Physio Balduina gym at Villa Stuart.
He has since returned to Udine and will continue his recovery at the Bruseschi sports centre.
The estimated recovery time for his complete rehabilitation is around six months, ruling him out of the upcoming AFCON qualifier.
Unfortunately, Ehizibue’s injury and surgery mean he will not be available for Nigeria’s AFCON qualifier against Sierra Leone June 18.
A victory for the three-time Africa champions will secure them a place at the AFCON tournament scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast next year.
