Six top tier sides in Nigeria have booked their places in the quarterfinal stage of the 2016 Federation Cup after matches on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The six Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) sides are Cup holders Akwa United, FC Ifeanyiubah, Nasarawa United, Rivers United, Warri Wolves and Wikki Tourists.
However, Crown FC, who play in the second tier, the Nigeria National League (NNL) saw off Enugu Rangers on Tuesday. Crown FC defeated the NPFL side 2-1.
In an all-NPFL clash between the Cup holders and Sunshine Stars on Tuesday, the former progressed after winning on 8-7 penalties.
However, on Wednesday in another all-NPFL clash in the round of 16, Rivers United move one step closer to their ambition of winning a silverware this season when they defeated 3SC on 3-2 penalties.
Rivers United goalkeeper Rotimi Sunday was the hero of the afternoon inside the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna as he saved two spot kicks to help his side reach the quarterfinals in the Federation Cup.
One of the giant-killing sides this season in the Cup competition, Prime FC, were eliminated by 2013 finalists, Warri Wolves through penalties after 90 minutes ended 1-1.
Wolves went in front on 20 minutes through Kelvin Itoya while Prime FC had a goal ruled for offside when Adeyemi Adeyeye thought he had pulled them level just before the break.
Close to the hour mark, Adeyeye scored from a goalmouth melee as Prime FC got back on even terms.
Wolves went to win 6-5 on penalties after Ikenna Ibezim missed his kick for Prime FC. The win represents Cup revenge for Wolves who lost on penalties in the 2014 edition of the Federation Cup.
A goal in each half from Suleiman Mohammed and Okereke Maduabuchi helped FC Ifeanyiubah cruise past Katsina United at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin.
NPFL joint leading scorer, Godwin Obaje, scored the winner for Wikki Tourists as they beat Plateau United 1-0.
Esosa Igbinoba's goal brought to an end Dynamite FC's run in the Cup as Nasarawa United also joined the big sides in the last eight.
One game between Nigerian champions, Enyimba and J. Atete FC, to decide the eighth team for the quarterfinals will hold at a later date.
