Leicester City Women centre back, Ashleigh Plumptre, has sparked a new sense of belief for the club after scoring in their 4-0 rout of Liverpool Ladies in their Barclays Women’s Super League game over the weekend.
The Nigerian defender rose high and headed home their third goal of the game from a corner kick in the second half after Josie Green and Carrie Jones had set the tone for a big win with two goals inside the opening 20 minutes.
The header was Plumptre’s first goal of the season and also her first at the King Power Stadium; which serves as their match venue if scheduling doesn’t clash with the men’s team.
“Proud of this group for the performance, clean sheet and more importantly, the result. Nice to get my first goal at King Power too. To the fans, thank you – you were incredible. We move,” she said after the game.
“You can tell it’s been a bit of a day because I’ve lost my voice,” Plumptre told LCFC TV post-match.
“But we came in with a game plan, and we executed it so well from start to finish. I think we had a little of a dead period in the second half. But you can tell that we planned for the game really well, and we were excellent.
“The coaches were saying that we were doing well defensively, but ultimately, the rest of the team make it a lot easier for us when they are putting pressure on Liverpool a lot higher up the pitch.”
Plumptre has made 17 appearances for the club this season and her lone goal so far is as much as she scored in the two previous seasons each.
Leicester are two points above the drop and have won their last two games which leaves them 10th on the Barclays Women’s Super League table with 13 points from 18 matches.
Their next game is against fourth-placed Arsenal on Friday.
