Iwobi rescues point for Toffees, ends seven-month goals drought

By Daily Sports Nigeria on May 2, 2023

Nigeria international Alex Iwobi scored a volley to rescue a point for Everton in a pulsating 2-2 draw against fellow relegation struggler Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Monday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The forward capitalised on Jordan Pickford’s crucial penalty save when he stopped James Maddison making it 3-1 just before the break.

The goal means the former Arsenal player scored for the first in seven months.

The 26-year-old last scored in October in the Toffees 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on matchday 10.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s spot-kick opened the scoring, just like Iwobi, it was the striker’s first goal since October, before it was cancelled out by Caglar Soyuncu.

Jamie Vardy’s goal sent Leicester ahead and Maddison missed the chance to put the hosts in control, with Iwobi levelling soon after the re-start.

Everton also lost captain Seamus Coleman to a serious injury to further add to their problems.

Realistically, a point did little to aid either side’s Premier League survival hopes in the short-term, although it did lift Leicester out of the bottom three on goal difference. Everton remain second bottom, a point from safety, with four games left.
