Injury delays Aina’s 100th Serie A game

By Daily Sports Nigeria on April 3, 2023

Torino defender, Ola Aina, will miss the club’s clash against Sassuolo on Monday (today) after picking up another knock in training.

The game is supposed to be Aina’s 100th game in the colours of Torino but he’s been forced out of the travelling team due to a lesion to the left soleus.

Aina had previously been out due to a muscle injury he picked up in October, and he is returning to the treatment table for at least another three weeks.

After the training session in Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon in preparation for their league meeting with Sassuolo, Torino issued a statement confirming that the Nigeria international underwent instrumental tests which highlighted a lesion to the left soleus.

The 26-year-old is unlikely to be involved today when the Maroons travel to the MAPEI Stadium – Città del Tricolore (Reggio nell’Emilia) to face the Black and Greens.

He is also expected to miss their next two games at least.

Aside from his loan move to Fulham in 2020/21, Aina is playing his fourth full season with Torino in the Seria A and he has amassed 99 caps,  starting 68 and coming from the bench on 31 occasions.

Since the start of the season, Aina has not been called up for nine games in total – eight as a result of a biceps femoris muscle injury and one as a result of suspension due to accumulated bookings.

He was not invited for Nigeria’s March internationals against Guinea-Bissau because he was ineligible for the home fixture.

The future of Aina should be one of the transfer stories of the summer transfer window, with his contract at Torino expiring at the end of the season.
