Akwa United will look to maintain their chase for a top-three finish when they host Enyimba at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Sunday (today), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Both teams head into this fixture on the back of respective draws from their last game while their first leg fixture on matchday two in Aba ended in a goalless draw.
Akwa United followed up their second half of the season opening win against 3SC with a 1-1 draw against Bendel Insurance, Enyimba are yet to win a game since the restart of league, having being forced to two consecutive 1-1 draws at home by Insurance and Nasarawa United, bringing their character to question in the race for the top-three in the tough Group A.
Although the result in Benin was shy off the target of their coach, Deji Ayeni but he was still satisfied with the result, stressing that the character must remain ahead of the Elephants visit.
Ayeni in a pre-match interview with the club’s website stressed that his team will approach the game with a positive mindset aimed at securing all three points.
“We are 100 per cent ready for Sunday’s (today) game against Enyimba. We are not under pressure, we will go all out with the right mentality because our target is to win the game.
“Football is all about goals and we have done a lot to ensure we will be aggressive and clinical in front of goal. Every match is very important to us and we won’t leave any stone unturned in the remaining seven games of the season.”
Ayeni is aware of their opponents’ apparent struggles recently, but he is more focused on the task of getting his team to a comfortable position in their pursuit for a top-three finish.
“Enyimba is a good team, and we have that respect for them but come Sunday we will give our all on the pitch to ensure we pick all three points. Victory on Sunday will improve our standing in the table and will push us closer to where we want to be.”
The Promise Keepers are third in the log with 19 points while Enyimba are a point behind them in fourth place.
