Retired Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha believes both Manchester United and their neighbours Manchester City are the ideal clubs for Nigeria international Victor Osimhen as rumours surrounding the future of the striker continue to gather momentum, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Red Devils have solely depended on the impressive Marcus Rashford so far this season and have a centre forward at the top of their shopping list going into the summer following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and the loan arrival of Wout Weghorst due to end in May while the Cityzens have in their ranks arrays of stars including Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez among others.
Osimhen is enjoying one of the best moments of his career with Napoli this season as he currently tops the Italian Serie A scorers chart with 21 goals, seven more than Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez, who is in second position with 14 goals.
The former Lille man’s fantastic form in front of goal is one of the reasons Luciano Spalleti’s side are league leaders, 21 points more than second-place Inter Milan and are on course to winning the Italian league title for the first time in over three decades.
While it is highly believed that the forward would be departing the Italian outfits at the end of the season despite the club insisting that he was not for sale, Okocha in an interview with BBC’s Mimi Fawas believed suggested the three teams that would be good fits for the young striker.
“Well, I think so. It’s a league that improves players as well, and you have to find the right club that suits your game to make things easier for yourself, so without any doubt, he is good to play in the Premier League,” he said.
“A team like Manchester City, but they have [Erling] Haaland now, and I think Manchester United as well. It might be an ideal club for him because they have been struggling to find a quality striker in recent years. Both Manchester teams might be ideal for him, and Arsenal as well.”
Okocha added that the Eagles striker deserved all the praise he is getting.
“I think he has done well, he is having a great season, and he deserves all the praise he is getting. But, I think the ultimate for him is to play in the [English] Premier League, which he has made clear as well. So, following his progress, I feel what he can achieve is limitless based on the continuity of his hard work.” he added.
Osimhen is currently with the national team as they prepare for their double-header Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea Bissau on March 24 and 27.
