As the world football governing body, FIFA, look set to announce the men’s national team rankings for the month of December on Thursday (today), the Super Eagles look set for a massive drop, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
In 2021, the Super Eagles ended the year in 36th position and it remains to be seen where the three-time African champions will finish the year following the outstanding performances of the African teams and others who took part at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The last ranking released by FIFA on October 6 saw the Eagles placed 32nd in the world and fourth in Africa amassing a total of 1498.47 points, a position they found themselves after dropping 6.23 points in the previous month (September).
With the 2022 FIFA World Cup just concluded, further drops for the Super Eagles is expected as African teams beneath Nigeria (Ghana and Cameroon) who took part at the Mundial recorded a win and a draw which will boost their ranking.
These wins and matches will have an impact on the latest FIFA World Ranking.
Cameroon recorded one of the biggest upsets in Qatar 2022 edging Brazil who are the world top-ranked team. Prior to that win, the Indomitable Lions had played out an enthralling 3-3 draw with Serbia.
The Indomitable Lions are currently ranked seventh in Africa and 43rd in the world, but their impress from the latest ranking might see them leapfrog Nigeria into the 4th position in Africa.
For Ghana, despite losing to Portugal and Uruguay in their group games they earned a hard-fought 3-2 win over South Korea and they are expected to move up the latest ranking.
The Black Stars are currently 11th in Africa and 61st in the world and could close in on the Eagles following their performance.
Morocco and Senegal will be the biggest movers upward among the African countries.
Morocco’s historic fourth-place finish at the World Cup could see it become Africa’s number one team – a move which could also see them surge into the top ten in the world.
The Atlas Lions recorded four wins, one draw and two defeats at the tournament making Walid Regragui’s side the first Arab country to attain that feat.
Senegal is also expected to move up after recording two wins and two losses.
