Mountain of Fire and Miracles Football Club (MFM FC) on Sunday afternoon came out victorious in the Lagos derby clash with Ikorodu United, who were led by their recently contracted Dutch coach, Theodorus Jacob de Jong.
MFM FC won the game played at their at the Agege Stadium fortress 3-1 with goals from Sikiru Olatunbosun in the 13th minute, Stephen Odey in the 69th minute and Ifeanyi Ifeanyi on the dot of 90 minutes. Ikorodu’s solitary goal came off the booths of Fatai Abdullahi in the 21st minute.
The match had in attendance the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, and members of the Lagos State house of Assembly. Security was tight, apparently to forestall a repeat of the crisis that erupted at the stadium during the last league match against Shooting Stars of Ibadan. The League Management Company had earlier ordered MFM to play three matches behind closed doors but later extended mercy by allowing the Olukoya Boys to throw the gates open for the derby.
The coach of MFM FC, Fidelis Ilechukwu, called the victory “a new beginning.”
On his part, Ikorodu United coach, Theodorus Jacob de Jong, expressed disappointment. He said that the game was okay in the beginning, though physical, but that there was a drop in the second half of the game. “We had to run after the opponents. It is disappointing because I hate losing, but it is part of the sport. We will prepare for our next game (against Ifeanyi Ubah), and hope to win,” he said. When asked about the possible drop to relegation, de Jong said: “We will fight for our survival, and see what comes out of it.”
League leaders, Wikki Tourist drew 0-0 in Bauchi against Enugu Rangers, but remain top of the NPFL table. League leading scorer Godwin Obaje as well as Alhassan Ibrahim a.k.a Muazam both had scoring chances but Rangers Ghanaian goalkeeper Nana Bonsu was in inspired form.
Enyimba FC, coming from continental duty, defeated El-Kanemi Warriors 2-0. Two second half goals from Nzube Anaezemba and Ezekiel Bassey did the job for the People’s Elephant.
As the NPFL table stands right now, Wikki Tourists sit on top with 42 points after 24 matches; Rangers International come second with 40 points after 24 matches, Rivers United sit third with 38 points after 23 matches; and Enyimba are fourth with 37 points out of 22 matches.
From the rear are Ikorodu United in 19th place with 15 points after 22 matches, Heartland in 18th place with 26 points after 24 matches and Shooting Stars in 17th place with 27 points out of 23 matches.
