Onana releases statement after leaving Cameroon camp

Goalkeeper André Onana insists he put his ‘efforts and energy into finding solutions to a situation that a footballer often experiences’ but found ‘no will on the other side.’

The Cameroon international is flying back home after being omitted from the squad for their World Cup match against Uruguay on Monday.

Gazzetta reported on Tuesday morning that Onana is flying back home from Qatar after his national team temporarily decided to suspend him for disciplinary reasons.

Onana has explained the situation from his perspective with a statement published on his Instagram stories.

Cameroon coach Rigobert Song said on Monday that Onana could have been reintroduced to the team if he had changed his attitude and respected the rules.

However, the conflict between the 26-year-old and his national team coach is described as ‘irreparable’, so Onana decided to leave the team and return home.

Cameroon have one point after two games in Group G and have little chance of qualifying for the Round of 16 given that they need to beat Brazil in the final match of the group phase on Friday.
