Eagles don’t deserve World Cup place – Amokachi

By Daily Sports Nigeria on November 22, 2022

Following Nigeria’s poor display in the 4-0 defeat against Portugal in Lisbon on Thursday, former Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi has expressed dissatisfaction with Jose Peseiro’s ability to manage the national team.

Amokachi queried the competence of Portuguese Peseiro to lead the Eagles, noting that Nigeria deserved a better and more competent coach for the national team.

Amokachi said, “When you look at the Portugal game, that tells you that we don’t even deserve to be there (World Cup),” Amokachi said on Channels TV.

“There are one, two, three different angles that you have to look at it, bringing in the right coach, bringing in the right players, and getting the right environment to play at.

“We always bring the wrong coaches to handle a country like Nigeria; we always bring the wrong players.”

The defeat also means that the 62-year-old coach has failed to win any of the five friendly matches played by the Eagles under his watch.

On Thursday, Peseiro adopted a 4-4-2 formation, with Calvin Bassey playing from left-back, Bright Osayi-Samuel in the right-back position and Kevin Akpoguma and William Troost-Ekong paired up in central defence.

Former Club Brugge forward Amokachi, 49, won the 1994 African Nations Cup and also represented the country at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups.

He also helped the national U-23 side win the Olympic gold medal at the Atlanta Games in 1996, scoring in the gold medal game against Argentina.
