Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has declared Portugal’s readiness to shine at the World Cup after helping the Selecao trounce Nigeria.
In a sold-out Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon on Thursday evening, Portugal ran out 4-0 winners in their final warm-up match before jetting out for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Bruno Fernandes was at the heart of everything good about the Portuguese, the midfielder scoring the home side’s first two goals.
The first was a first-time finish past goalkeeper Francis Uzoho while the second was from the penalty spot after Bernardo Silva’s cross struck the arm of the lively Bright Osayi-Samuel.
Gonçalo Ramos and João Mário added two more goals in the second half of the encounter, moments after Emmanuel Dennis missed a penalty for Nigeria.
Pleased with the Selecao’s display, Fernandes believed Portugal were perfect against the sorry Eagles.
“The perfection didn’t exist or at least it is very hard to accomplish, but we made a great game, dominating every level,” Fernandes told Sport TV.
“It was a win that gives us great confidence ahead of our debut against Ghana. We are a team, it is not about individuals and we have a great group, young players that are up-and-coming and hungry. We are ready for the World Cup.”
The Super Eagles, under coach Jose Peseiro, finish 2022 on a low after losing their last matches of the year to Algeria and Portugal.
