Liverpool’s chances of signing Kylian Mbappe have suffered a major blow after the Paris Saint-Germain star suggested he is happy to remain at the Parc des Princes.
Speculation has continued to surround Mbappe’s future despite him signing a new three-year deal with PSG in the summer.
Mbappe turned down a move to Real Madrid to remain with the French champions, reportedly becoming the world highest-paid player in the process.
However, reports from earlier this season claimed that Mbappe was unhappy at PSG and keen to leave the club in the January window.
It was claimed that the relationship between the player and the French club had “completely broken”.
Meanwhile, French outlet Le Parisien claimed that Mbappe felt “betrayed” by PSG’s hierarchy and believed they had failed to deliver promises that were made to him when he signed his new contract.
Spanish publication Marca claim the French champions would be unwilling to sell Mbappe to Real Madrid, leaving Liverpool as one of the only other options for the forward.
But the France international has now suggested he is happy at PSG, playing down the likelihood of him leaving the club.
“You can stay here [PSG] to have success,” Mbappe told Sports Illustrated.
“For us, it’s a big message because when I announced I would stay, a lot of things changed in the mentality of people. People started to say, ‘Yeah, we don’t need to go out. You don’t need to leave the country’.”
“In Paris, the page is blank. What an opportunity! You have to think differently. Of course, it was easier to go to Madrid. But I have this ambition.
“I’m French. I’m a child of Paris, and to win in Paris, it’s something really special—really special. To write your name in the history of your country for life.”
Mbappe’s latest comments will come as a blow to Liverpool supporters, who hoped the 23-year-old might move to Anfield.
“We talked a little bit, but not too much. We talked a little bit,” said Mbappe.
“I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her!
“It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club.”
