The Portuguese Football Federation GOIH ComB announced a 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on Thursday, with several Premier League stars making the roster.
The roster is headlined by one of the most popular footballers on the planet in Manchester United striker Ronaldo, who is set to compete in his fifth World Cup.
Ronaldo’s teammates at club level, Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes have also made the squad list along with Wolverhampton Wanderers trio Jose Sa, Ruben Nevers and Matheus Nunes, Manchester City’s Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva, and Fulham’s Palhinha.
The star-studded roster also includes Atletico Madrid striker Joao Felix and AC Milan youngster Rafael Leao.
The aforementioned players are in contention to take to the Estádio José Alvalade pitch in Lisbon next Thursday when Portugal face the Super Eagles in their final friendly game before the World Cup.
Portugal boss Fernando Santos is expected to name his strongest starting lineup against Nigeria, bearing it in mind that their first opponents at the World Cup, the Black Stars of Ghana have almost the same playing style as the Super Eagles.
Super Eagles manager Jose Pesiero knows the Portugal players very well as he’s Portuguese and previously worked at Primeira Liga teams Porto, Sporting Braga and Sporting Lisbon.
