Former Nigerian jumper, hurdler and sprinter, Seigha Porbeni, has given thumps up to the yearly Government College Ughelli (GCU) Relays, just as he is eagerly projecting with great optimism towards the fourth edition holding on November 19.
Porbeni is the current Special Adviser to the Delta State Sports Commission Chairman and Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) President, Tonobok Okowa.
Porbeni, yesterday, inspected some of the facilities for the Relays, including the Timetronics electronic, as well as the running techniques of the athletes.
He met his bosom friend, Prof. Okpako and President General Worldwide, GCUOBA, Arc. Charles Majoroh.
“I am truly impressed with the turn out of the participating schools and the general ambience of the Inter Collegiate Competition.
It reminds one of our school days competitive experience at Hussey College Warri,” Porbeni said.
“I must give thumps up to the excellent facilities, good organisation and sportsmanly conduct of the participating schools and athletes.
“In Competitions, such as this GCU Relays, we focus our attention more on the athletes’ running techniques, as well as returned times. That way, we can readily identify the stars and future talents for national competitions,” he stated.
From the summation of last year’s edition of the GCU relays, Porbeni remarked on the uniqueness of the 2022 version.
The annual GCU relays, a brainchild of the Old Boys Association, is modeled after the PENNS Invitational Relays in America, and also intended to fully utilise the tartan tracks built and donated to the school by NNPC/SHELL Petroleum Development Company.
