Over 90 schools have registered to participate in the fourth Lagos Elite School Cup slated to begin at Mater Ecclesiae College Igbodu, Epe, Lagos on October 8, the organisers have disclosed.

The Elite School Cup is a yearly sporting platform for private secondary schools students in Lagos State to hone their skills in different sports.

The competition features athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, e-sport, chess and scrabble, among others.

Addressing journalists at the media briefing to unveil the Elite Cup tournament at Holy Child College, Obalende, Ikoyi, at the weekend, director, Schools Sports, Lagos State Sports Commission, Dr. Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, who represented the Commission’s executive chairman, Sola Aiyepeku, said that the body is delighted to identify with the Elite Cup championship.

She said that Lagos State supports initiatives by organisations or individuals that would yield positive results for the state.

“Lagos State is happy to be involved in the fourth Elite Schools Cup involving athletes from private secondary schools across Lagos State.

“I will like to appreciate the efforts of the organisers for their contribution to the social pillar of Lagos State sports development. Parents should understand that sports is an indispensable part of education…they complement each other, which is why our slogan is ‘Stay in School, stay in Sports.’

“The Sports Commission is not only focused on private schools, we also focus on maintaining the pedigree of organising sports programmes for both private and public schools,” she said.

Also speaking on the event, M.D., Elite School Cup, Shokoya Olayinka, said the championship has been grouped into two zones, with Atlantic zone, which is made up of schools on the Island to be hosted by Mater Ecclesia College.

Schools in Mainland zone, he said, will play their games in Ikorodu.

“With over 90 schools registered and ready to attend, there is need to improve on the championship. This is why we introduced the E-Sport competition, bringing in scouts from Europe to fish out talents for possible sports and education scholarship abroad.

“We have also put up a platform to monitor the performance and age of athletes for easier reference to any sports academy or organisation.

“After the zonal championship, the national final of the Elite Cup will hold in November in a yet to be disclosed venue or date,” he said.

Financial Administrator/Bursar, Holy Child College, Rev. Sister Christiana Olagunju, who promised that the school will not relent in supporting sports development, boasting that Holy Child Girls College that are defending champions of the women basketball event, will still emerge champions this year.
