Four Nigerian boxers battle for gold medals today

By Daily Sports Nigeria on August 6, 2022

Four Nigerian boxers are eying gold medal spot today as they slug it out with their opponents in the semifinal at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The four pugilists, one male and three females, qualified for this stage on Thursday, and it is expected that Nigeria will get some medals to improve its placement on the medals table.

In the women’s featherweight, Elizabeth Oshoba, who edged Tianna Guy of Trinidad & Tobago 3-2 in the quarterfinals, will take on Australia’s Aist Rahimi.

In the women’s lightweight category, Ogunsemilore Cynthia will fancy her chances against Nira Broadhurst of Northern Ireland. She out-punched Botswana’s Aratwa Fancinah Kasemang in the quarterfinals also on Thursday.

A day earlier, Ummunakwe Jacinta qualified for the semifinals without throwing a punch, having walked over Tgam Ula of Tonga in the middleweight category and will face Mozr Gramane of Mozambique today.

The only man standing, Onyekwere Ifeanyi, outclassed Canada’s Marcel Jerome Mouafo Feujio 5-0 on Thursday to qualify for the semi-finals in the Super heavyweight class. He will take on NDS Sagar of India.

Nigeria is looking to do better than its performance in the event at the last edition in Gold Coast, Australia, where she won two medals via Millicent Agboegbulem and Yetunde Odunuga won bronze in the women’s middleweight and lightweight events, respectively.

The country took nine boxers, four men and five women, to Birmingham. The male boxers include Abdul-Afeez Osoba (Light middleweight), Adeyinka Benson (Middleweight), Innocent Ehwarieme (Light heavyweight) and Ifeanyi Onyekwere (Super heavyweight), while the women’s are Yetunde Egunjobi (Light flyweight), Elizabeth Oshoba (Featherweight), Cynthia Ogunsemilore (Lightweight), Bolanle Shogbamu (Light middleweight) and Jacinta Umunnakwe (Middleweight).
