Breaking News: Sundowns back to zero point in Champions League

By Daily Sports on June 24, 2016

Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa are back to zero point in the 2016 Africa Champions League after being sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The sanction followed the disruption of Match No.98 between ES Setif (Algeria) and Mamelodi Sundowns during which Sundowns Coach Pitso Mosimane and ES Setif supporter Khama Billiat interfered the game that was later stopped for the safety of players with two minutes to go.

The Organising Committee for CAF Interclub Competitions decided to apply the provisions of Chapter XII para 3 of the Regulations of the Champions League CAF and consider the team ES Setif and loser eliminated from the competition, without prejudice to other penalties that may be imposed by the Disciplinary Panel of CAF.

Chapter XII para 3 of the competition regulations states: “If the referee is forced to stop the match before its prescribed purpose due to a pitch invasion or aggression against the visiting team, the host team shall be considered loser and shall be eliminated from the competition, notwithstanding the sanctions provided by the statutes and regulations.”

On the outcome of that match, it is canceled in accordance with the spirit of Article XI.13 of the regulations stipulating that: “If a team withdraws after the start of the group matches played without half the group matches the overall results of meetings which the team participated is canceled.”
