Barcelona B defender Godswill Elohor Ekpolo has teamed up with the Nigeria Under-23 side in Abuja as the team prepares to travel to the United States for camping.
Nigeria will hold their final leg of preparations for the Rio 2016 Olympics in North America with friendly games against Mexico and Honduras on the menu for the team.
Ekpolo, who flew to Abuja via London from his base in Spain, told superpsort.com that he is excited to team up with the squad and intends to make use of the opportunity to fulfill his dream of playing for Nigeria at the Olympics.
“It’s really a wonderful feeling joining up with the team here in Abuja. I loved the short time we spent together in Brazil and I’m looking forward to working with coach (Samson) Siasia and the boys,” he said.
“I was part of the team that beat Brazil 1-0 in a friendly. The time we spent together was very nice. Meeting the rest of the players was really interesting and we formed a bond.
“I came in on Thursday morning and trained with the team and I really had a good time.”
This will be the first time Ekpolo will be in Nigeria since he left the country as a toddler, an experience he said he has been looking forward to.
“This is my first time coming back home since I went to Spain at a very tender age. It been a long time,” the right-back revealed.
“When I touched down Abuja it was really something awesome, I cannot describe the feeling. Coming back home is really great.
“I've already trained with the team and I’m optimistic I will do enough to convince the coaches and make the team. It is my dream to play in the Olympics.”
