Super Eagles Technical Adviser: is José Peseiro The Messiah?

By By Victor Enyinnaya on May 16, 2022

Before the news of Jose Peseiro’s appointment as technical hand of the Super Eagles broke last Saturday, Salisu Yusuf, the discredited assistant coach with the team released the names of the players who would lace their boots in the two international friendly matches coming up in the United States of America against Mexico and Ecuador national teams.

This columnist is still vehemently asking questions on Yusuf’s continued stay in the team and therefore so shall it be without any prejudice of any kind.

When illegality is being sustained in Nigeria, this is how it is. Those that appointed Yusuf who openly confessed that he collected  bribe from players to feature them in the Eagles and was suspended by the NFF via FIFA’s insistence served out the punishment and pronto got a job with the NFF as first assistant coach in the Super Eagles and chief coach of CHAN Eagles.

Salisu Yusuf’s presence in the national team remains suspicious in all ramifications as my unanswered questions have when FIFA suspends its executive committee member (s) for wrong, does the same FIFA absorb such fellow when the suspension is served out?  (So Where did NFF get this from. Answer please).

At last, Nigeria Football Federation blackmailed Sports Minister, Sunday Dare to accepting the Portuguese national Jose Peseiro as the current technical adviser of the Super Eagles replacing former coach and journey man Franco German handler, Gernot Rohr.

It would be recalled that the NFF has been hell bent on smuggling in the Portuguese as the helmsman of Nigeria’s flagship team. What makes my good self critical and other objective observers wonder what is in this Portuguese that NFF has finally given appointment to handle our Eagles?

For the records he does not have what it takes in coaching. His records are in the public domain we are still at a loss the rationale behind this decision.

My question is: Is Jose Peseiro the messiah? More questions than answers. He must prove me wrong that he is not another more you look and the less you see foreign technical adviser for Nigeria’s Super Eagles. Time they said will tell.

This columnist and others are keenly watching and would truly continue to follow Peseiro’s workings in the team which of course will not be hidden from the public.  Let me make it abundantly clear here that I don’t have anything against the employment of this gentle man coach but my take or vote has been for a sound, first rate and highly qualified technical hand for the team especially now that the side is at her lowest ebb of performance.

In my objective thinking Nigeria in this period needed a one stop technical adviser that has seen its all i.e. with proven records of high performance in national teams.  But that again is not to be by HFF that has stage managed this process again like the previous.

Nigeria has players that needed to be harnessed to the fullest which Rohr could not handle. In short the Super Eagles overwhelmed him. His trial and error method could not carry him for too long and like a pretender of the worst order he was here, his obvious lapses were exposed wholesale.

When the heat became unbearable NFF executive committee that had been his pillar abandoned him hence his sack.

The state of the Super Eagles team is nothing to write home about in the first instance. I don’t know how and where Peseiro would start from. Eagles’ squad is a very complex side like Nigeria herself and needed a person of proven integrity, quality; hardworking, technically and tactically sound to provide solid and stronger cover for the team that has currently lost her bearing.

Head or tail, all eyes are on this Portuguese national who has accepted the hot seat. One prays he will not escape from the border when the heat will be intensively on.

What the teeming Nigerian football fans needed today are to see her darling side competing strongly as before. Seeing Eagles flying steadily with her two wings sharply intact. No longer a team without a definite pattern.  No more full of inconsistencies against even lesser teams from other countries be it Africa or the World.

Nigerian football fans are tire of watching colourless Eagles. As the NFF has settled for this man again and finally found or made her way through to the Sports Minister, Sunday Dare after the later vowed never to support anything short of a known technical adviser that has handled teams and also proven his mettle.

As it is now Jose Peseiro is the new technical adviser of the Super Eagles in this critical and crucial period of our national football at that highest level. We will not fail to keep eagle eyes on this man. Keep shooting hard till next week. Meanwhile we Wait!!
