Renowned American boxer and boxing promoter, Floyd Mayweather meets Rotimi Amaechi as he visits Nigeria, promises to build boxing academy.
The former multi-weight champion spoke at a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, May 8, when he visited Nigeria to promote his exhibition match against Don Moore in Dubai.
Mayweather also visited Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation, at his Abuja residence on Monday, May 9.
The 45-year-old boxing promoter said he’s been wanting to visit Nigeria for a while but “things did not go as expected”.
He also said he plans to build “a boxing camp” in Nigeria to help the development of the sport in the country.
He added that he would return to the country in the future “to train and continue to build my legacy”.
He said: “Before I go to Dubai, I couldn’t choose a better place than Nigeria. I look forward to coming back to Nigeria to train and continue to build my legacy, and we also want to help build a boxing camp for the young youth and children coming up. With the help of Keane, one of my closest buddies, who is from Nigeria,.”
Mayweather’s Lucreative lifestyle
Mayweather is one of the most lucrative pay-per-view attractions of all time, in any sport. He topped the Forbes and Sports Illustrated lists of the 50 highest-paid athletes of 2012 and 2013, and the Forbes list again in both 2014 and 2015, listing him as the highest-paid athlete in the world.
In 2006, he founded his own boxing promotional firm, Mayweather Promotions, after leaving Bob Arum’s Top Rank. Mayweather has generated approximately 24 million PPV buys and $1.67 billion in revenue throughout his career, surpassing the likes of former top PPV attractions including Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao.
In 2018, Mayweather was the highest-paid athlete in the world, with total earnings, including endorsements amounting to $285 million, according to Forbes. In November, 2021, Sportico released an all-time athlete earnings list, in which Mayweather ranked no. 6 all time, totaling an inflation-adjusted $1.2 billion throughout his career.
