Erik ten Hag will oversee an overhaul of the Manchester United squad when he arrives at Old Trafford with as many as 12 players set for the exit and one outcast set to handed a ‘key role’.
United are said to be preparing to officially announce the appointment of Ten Hag as their new permanent manager next season.
The current Ajax boss will take the reins from interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who believes United may need as many as ten new players next season.
That means a number of current United stars will need to leave to make room in the squad and on the wage bill.
Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata and Lee Grant are out of contract this summer and are all expected to leave the club, and the Mirror says (speculates) that six further players could be heading for the exit.
The report states that Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Alex Telles, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford ‘could also go to allow Ten Hag to begin his overhaul’.
But Donny van de Beek, who has barely played for United since his move from Ajax two years ago, and is currently on loan at Everton, looks set to be handed a ‘key role’ by the Dutch manager.
He said: “Jurgen came six years ago and if you compare the squad he inherited, he came after eight or nine games and finished eighth, this is roundabout where we are currently,” he said.
“He had a point average of that season of 1.6 but with every transfer window after that they develop the kind of squad we have today.
“I am not blaming anyone, not my players nor anyone else, but we just have to realise what kind of squad they had available.
“Look at their bench, look at the four players who weren’t even in the squad: Roberto Firmino was the only one who was injured.
“Oxlade-Chamberlain wasn’t in the squad, Minamino was not in the squad, Harvey Elliott was not in the squad. This shows what kind of quality and team they have built together working with Jurgen and his team for the last six years.
“It is not just the quality of players but what kind of mentality they have, what kind of energy and physicality compared with high-speed. I would say they have 25 Formula One cars in their squad.”
