West Ham are reportedly preparing to sell full-back Arthur Masuaku, as they are looking to free up space on the wage bill for some new signings.
Masuaku has been mainly a bit-part player during his time at West Ham. Indeed, he has made no more than 20 senior appearances in each of the last three seasons.
With that being said, the left-back has amassed 127 appearances in his six seasons at the club. He has been a useful asset at times, playing both as a left-back and left-midfielder.
However, he has been mainly on the fringes this season, having started just five league games. Furthermore, Aaron Cresswell and youngster Ben Johnson have been preferred to Masuaku this campaign.
As such, it seems the 28-year-old is now surplus to requirements.
Claret&Hugh reports that West Ham are looking to offload the star. The east London side are reportedly keen on seeing him move on permanently, but would settle for a loan.
The main reason for seeing Masuaku leave the club – other than his diminishing role – is his wages. The left-back reportedly makes £50,000 a week, which the Hammers are likely keen to get off the books.
Given Masuaku is still under contract until 2024, David Moyes’ side could make a decent fee.
They apparently value the star at around £5million, which is only slightly less than the £6million – as per Sky Sports – they paid to sign him from Olympiakos in 2016.
It seems plausible that Masuaku could command that sort of fee. Indeed, he has shown his quality when called upon this season, and could be a useful asset for another side.
Should West Ham succeed in getting Masuaku’s contract off the books, it could lead to them making some new signings. The Hammers have been pushing for a top-four finish for much of this season, and improving in the summer could mean for the same again next term.
Moyes’ side have been linked with some big transfers of late.
Darwin Nunez is one of the biggest potential deals that they could pull off. Indeed, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano thinks the Hammers have ‘good chances’ of landing the prolific Benfica striker.
They should be able to offer him, and other potential signings, good wages.
