Ronaldo draws blank as Atlético knock Man Utd out of Champions League

By Daily Sports Nigeria on March 16, 2022

Manchester United have been knocked out of this season’s UEFA Champions League after Renan Lodi’s first-half header sealed a 1-0 victory for Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford.

United and Atletico came into the game having shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in the first leg. All eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo to produce the goods, having done so on Saturday when he scored a hattrick to seal victory against Spurs.

It was not to be though, and after a period of a sustained possession by Manchester United in the early stages, Atletico hit them on the break a few times.

Joao Felix had the ball in the back of the net just after the hour mark but it was ruled out for an offside in the build-up. A few minutes later, Renan Lodi peeled away from his marker to finish off an Antoine Griezmann cross after a fantastic team move.

United struggled to create any openings after and have now crashed out of the UEFA Champions League before the quarterfinal stage in seven of the last nine seasons.
