*Says it is too early, distracting for the team

President of Super Eagles Supporters Club (SESC), Prince Vincent Okumagba, has thumbed up the performance of the Super Eagles at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football tournament in Cameroon, adding that the zeal of the players and the interim technical team led by Austin Eguavoen to succeed has been the bedrock of the victories thus far.

Okumagba who spoke to Daily Sports from Cameroon shortly after Nigeria dismissed her Guinea Bissau counterpart in the last Group D game, insisted that in as much as the Nigerian side kept a clean slate during the group stage games, it was not enough to say the team has finally arrived.

According to him, there were still lots of work to be done on the team as Nigeria qualifies for the round of 16 teams the crunchy knock-out stage.

“I won’t like to be drawn into whether we need foreign hand or not for now because it is still too early in the day to start that huge debate. I will suggest that all hands must be on deck to support this team in its quest to excel rather than this distraction. I am not noted for counting the chicken before the eggs are hatched; rather one thing at a time. The boys and the technical hands should be encouraged to concentrate more on the bigger tasks ahead. Focusing on the assignment in Cameroon currently should be uppermost in our minds if I am asked,” Okumagba counseled.

The SESC supremo said that though this team has set the record of maintaining 100 per cent which is the great enough and confidence-boosting measure for the team, he called for vigilance on the part of the Super Eagles as the round of 16 challenge begins.

“We have seen how the team played during the just concluded group stage and I believe that Eguaveon and his men have known what and what to do before their next game.

Once what was thrown up during the game is being taken care of, then we can take it from there. Our boys are quick to recovery whenever they lose the ball to their opponents and if such character is thoroughly held, we can hope of upward movement in the ongoing Africa’s premier football championship. We need steady discussion with the crew and ensure they are provided with all that they need to do the nation proud this moment,” he insists.

Okumagba, however, commended the leadership of the NFF for their foresight in supporting the team. He emphasised that he was not surprised over the NFF act, as the apex football governing body in the country are known for its total support since they came to office. He believes that if all eyes are on the ball for this project, we may laugh last.

He assured that his strong team of supporters were already on ground, doing what they knew how to do best to - total support for the Eagles; and for the good of the game, too.

He revealed that SESC would continue to render absolute support to the Eagles as their drums, flutes, songs and all are heard loudest in Cameroun, adding, we are grateful for the selfless services to our fatherland.”
