Former international, Friday Ekpo, has appealed to Nigerians to support Super Eagles’ Interim Coach, Austin Eguavoen, as he begins preparation for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroun next month. Ekpo, told The Guardian during the Lagos FA Cup final between Vandrezzer FC and Box To Box FC at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, that until another coach is announced to take charge of the Eagles, Eguavoen remains the coach and should build his team around players on current form.
“Every country in the AFCON is a contender for the title and Nigeria is likely to win the tournament. That is why Eguavoen needs to start preparing the team right from the day he was given the job as the interim coach. “He should not wait for any coach that is being rumoured to take over from him before the start of the tournament. All I know is that he is the one in charge for now and he needs to begin to put things in place and pick his players, not on past glory, but on current form,” he said.
The former Super Eagles’ midfielder said the timing of Gernot Rohr’s sack “was never too late for things to be done rightly. I think at that point, that was what we wanted to do and it took us a long time to arrive at that. “I think the sack was done at the right time for the country,” he said, adding, “I believe former Eagles stars, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Garba Lawal’s selection to give technical advice to the team’s coaching crew will really help. They are not going to do Eguavoen’s work because everyone has his own work and the time is so short before the AFCON. But we all need to support the team to see them do well at the AFCON. “If we don’t do well at the AFCON, then we have to go back to the drawing board, as we have always been doing each time we don’t do well at any competition.” (Guardian.ng)
