Victor Letsoala 38th minute goal was the difference as Royal AM defeated Kaizer Chiefs at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium on Sunday.
Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi was in action as Chiefs’ unbeaten run in the DStv Premiership came to an end after a narrow 1-0 defeat at Royal. The Nigerian made his 10th appearance between the sticks for his South African side this season and was hoping to make it two consecutive clean sheets.
It was a difficult game for Akpeyi and his teammates, who were up against a side that had been formidable at home as they were yet to lose their last seven home games.
The tie started on a frenzy as both sides tried to cancel each other. Chiefs recorded two shots on target, but none beat Royal keeper Hugo Nyame.
With just seven minutes to the end of the first 45 minutes, poor defending by captain Bernard Parker saw the referee award a penalty in favour of the hosts. Akpeyi was unable to save the resulting kick as Letsoala coolly converted from the spot.
Stuart Baxter’s men approached the second half with urgency, but were unable to break the opponents’ strong defence as Royal maintained an impenetrable shape.
It ended 1-0 as Chiefs saw their five-game unbeaten run brought to an end.
Up next for Akpeyi is a game against Maritzburg on December 22, before he joins up with the Eagles ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in January. (The PUNCH)
