Visiting Wikki Tourists on Sunday evening maintained their grip on the top spot at the resumption of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) after they beat Ikorodu United 1-0 at the Onikan Stadium. Idris Guda found the back of the net after 85 minutes of the match to hand the tourists double victory against Ikorodu United this season. The victory took Wikki to 34 points from 19 matches.
Ikorodu United remain bottom of the table with a miserable three wins and four draws from 19 matches to hand them 13 points.
After the match, Wikki midfielder Harrison Madu said: “We are excited with the hard-fought away victory at newly promoted side, Ikorodu United. Ikorodu United actually gave their best in the encounter but met a more experienced and matured side. We outplayed Ikorodu United in all departments of the game and ably deserved to win.
“Our victory today is a signal of our intention to keep tightly the summit position on the top flight. We will continue to improve in every match to ensure our target to be champions is achieved at the end of the day.”
At the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers United won 1-0 against Lobi Stars to maintain the second spot, also with 34 points, but with a lesser goal difference. Christian Weli scored from a fine header on 79 minutes to gift three points to the home team. Rivers United mounted pressure in the second half to increase the tally but to no avail, leaving final score of the game played under heavy downpour at 1-0.
A seven-minute goal from Ifeanyi George gave Enyimba a slim victory against Nassarawa United at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi. This result takes Enyimba to the fifth place with 30 points after 19 matches.
