The women’s National basketball team, D’tigress are to commence their FIBA Afrobasket Championship title defence against Mozambique on Sept.18 in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The team, has in the meantime arrived Yaounde, Cameroon, on Tuesday, with 13 players and officials, according to a statement issued to newsmen by Afolabi Oni, the media representative of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).

The statement said that the team, under the watchful eyes of Coach Otis Hughley, has in the last four years emerged as the most successful team in Africa with back-to-back Afrobasket titles in 2017 and 2019, and aiming to win it for the third straight time.

The team, currently riding on the back of a 13-match unbeaten run, which has produced two Afrobasket championship titles, would see Elizabeth Balogun making a return alongside Promise Amukamara, Ezinne Kalu, Pallas Kunayi-Akpannah and Ifunanya Ibekwe.

Nkem Akaraiwe has also been listed alongside Amy Okonkwo, who is set to make her Afrobasket debut, with Oderah Chidom, Nicole Enabosi and Murjanatu Musa.

Sarah Ogoke who is one of the most senior members of the team returns with Victoria Macaulay to the team, to be captained by Adaora Elonu.

The 13-member list would be pruned down to 12 before the commencement of the championship, the statement indicated.
