Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Executive Committee member and Chairman, Enyimba International FC of Aba, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu, has declared that the team fears no foe in the group stage of the 2016 CAF Champions League. He was reacting was to the draws recently released from the Cairo Headquarters of the continental football governing body.
Anyasi-Agwu made it clear that his side is not new to the apex club competition in Africa, and thus know that the name of the game at this level is vigilance, concentration, zeal, motivation, hard work and extra determination.
He told Daily Sports: “We are quite aware of what awaits us ahead and are gearing earnestly towards achieving such. The coaching crew led by Paul Aigbogun and the players are aware of the tedious journey ahead. Moreover, now that the opponents are known we are not going to relent to tidy up loose ends before hostilities resume. As usual, it won’t be an easy one from all fronts. However, the fact remains that Enyimba fears not foe. We will be meeting them as they come. No team at this stage is a pretender. We are ready.”
Anyasi-Agwu, who led Enyimba when it won the championship back-to-back, stressed that inasmuch as the stage is set for the group stage, the Nigerian side has always prepared for the worst. “There is no team the Aba billionaires cannot face squarely in the continent; after all, we are all ex-champions at one stage or the other,” he said.
On the fact that Zamalek is five times champions, the NFF Executive Committee member informed that his boys will not allow such record to intimidate them, saying that it would rather spur them for greater action when the chips are down as they are now one of the traditional big names in African football.
According to him, “Teams are preparing; as such no stone would be left unturned. On our part, we pray for an injury-free team. I am very sure also that the team would not lack motivation and attention. This is when concentration to the fullest is paramount. The players and crew will no doubt redouble their efforts in order to give their best. This is when optimum performance is highly needed. No half measures as there will be no retreat, no surrender. Nigeria has a name to protect and Enyimba is the best partner to uphold it supremely.”
Anyasi-Agwu called for prayers and unflinching co-operation amongst Nigerians as the team is not representing Abia State but Nigeria.
Daily Sports reports that Enyimba is in Group B with Zamalek of Egypt, ES Setif of Algeria and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa. The group games will kick-off between June 17 and August 24.
