I Have Not Retired — Asamoah Gyan

By Daily sports on August 19, 2021

Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan insists that his professional career is not over, as he looks to work his way back to fitness and form.

The 35-year-old spent the 2020-21 season with Ghana Premier League (GPL) club Legon Cities – having joined as a free agent in November of last year – but struggled to make an impact on his return to his home country due to injuries.

Many have speculated that Gyan will hang up his boots now that the GPL is in recess after the completion of the delayed 20-21 campaign, but the former Black Stars captain says he is still hungry to play.

“I have not retired from football,” the national team’s all-time top goalscorer told Kessben FM, as quoted by Football Ghana.

“There were some injuries last season but I am not done playing football. I can wake up one day and announce my retirement from football but at the moment, I am active.

“People will criticise me but I am only hoping to get back to my normal form and weight, but if I am not able to regain my form, then I will call it off, but at the moment I am working on myself to lose my weight.

“I returned to Legon Cities and you could clearly see that things did not go as planned because I have [been] putting on weight, but I am giving myself another season and I trust I will be back to my form and if I am on my form, I don’t think I will be overlooked, but for retirement, not now.”

Gyan has not played for Ghana’s Black Stars since the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. His extensive club career includes spells at Sunderland, Udinese, Rennes, Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG and Kayserispor. (African Football)
