Hayatou To Vacate AFCON Post After FIFA Ban

By Daily sports on August 6, 2021

Former Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Issa Hayatou will vacate his post as head of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) local organising committee following the one-year ban handed to him by FIFA earlier this week.

The Cameroonian official has been banned from all football-related activities for one year after breaching article 15 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, specifically relating to his involvement in the TV and media rights deal with Lagardère Sport during his tenure as CAF president.

“Mr Hayatou had breached his duty of loyalty in his position as CAF president, by entering, in the name and on behalf of the confederation, into an anti-competitive agreement with Lagardère Sport which was detrimental and caused significant damage to CAF,” read a statement from FIFA.

The football world governing body added, “The adjudicatory chamber found that Mr Hayatou had breached article 15 of the current edition of the FIFA Code of Ethics and sanctioned him with a ban from taking part in any kind of football-related activity at both national and international level (administrative, sports or any other) for one year.”

This ban rules the 74-year-old out of playing any further role in the next AFCON, set to be held in his home country from 9 January to 6 February of next year.

Hayatou is the longest-serving CAF president, with his tenure running from 1988 to 2017 when he was defeated in the election by Ahmad Ahmad. (African Football)
