Why Onuachu Missed Genk Match

By Daily sports on August 1, 2021

Nigeria international Paul Onuachu’s omission from KRC Genk’s matchday squad ahead of their clash with KV Oostende has been explained.

The towering marksman was a noticeable absentee from the Genk team which suffered a 4-3 defeat to Oostende in a Belgian Pro League match on Friday.

Onuachu, who is the reigning Belgian Pro League Player of the Season, has been constantly linked with English Premier League clubs West Ham United, Arsenal FC, Watford, and French giants Lyon.

The 27-year-old looked set to take the next leap in his career after he scored 37 goals for Genk last season, but his suitors have reportedly been put off by his €30million asking price.

Genk head coach John van den Brom felt that Onuacho was not ready to face Oostende hence he was omitted from the matchday squad.

“I’ve been keeping an eye on Paul this week and talking to him a lot. You should always be honest with each other,” Van den Brom told Het Nieuwsblad.

“I thought he wasn’t ready and he agreed. You are dealing with a team and we all need focus. I had a feeling that wasn’t the case with him.

“Hopefully we can get him ready to play by Tuesday. We shouldn’t make a drama out of this either. It is handy that with Cyriel I have another very good option.”

Onuachu, who has scored three goals in 13 international matches for Nigeria, has been on the books of Genk since August 2019 having joined the club from Danish side FC Midtjylland. (African Football)
