Tottenham Keeper Oluwayemi Eyes More Nigeria Call-Ups

By Daily sports on July 5, 2021

New Nigeria international and goalkeeper Joshua Oluwayemi says he wants to be a regular face in the Super Eagles squad.

The 20-year-old, who is on the books of English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, was handed his maiden call up ahead of the Super Eagles’ clash against Mexico.

Oluwayemi was an unused substitute as a Nigeria side made up mostly of home-based players succumbed to a 4-0 defeat to Mexico in an international friendly match in the USA on Sunday morning.

“It was a long trip but I’m happy to be here and I’m looking forward to the game against Mexico,” he said on the Super Eagles Instagram handle.

“Back in London, it was a proud moment for my family seeing me represent my nation with such a strong Nigerian background I have in London.

Oluwayemi, who was born in England to parents of Nigerian descent, was a late call-up to the Super Eagles squad for the clash against Mexico following an injury to Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

“My whole community around me was so proud. First, [my immediate target] is to make sure I am at my best against Mexico and give my best performance,” he added.

“[The] long term goal is to make sure that I keep coming back and cement my place in this team.”

Nigeria’s next matches are against Liberia and Cape Verde in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September 2021. (African Football)
